New stages, bosses, power-ups and soundtrack.

D-Pad Studios might be best known for its story-based platformer Owlboy, but it is worth remembering that the developers were in fact behind another game prior to this, Savant – Ascent, and, neatly, that game is about to turn ten years old.

So what exactly does turning ten mean for this gorgeous shoot-em-up platformer? Well, a tenth-anniversary remastered edition is on its way and it’s bringing with it a boatload of new content.

“We can’t wait for you to experience it!”.

You might recall how the Sonic Mania developer Headcannon had some involvement in Sonic Origins. Now, following the announcement of Sonic Origins Plus, the “indie game and utilities” developer has confirmed it’s “once again” cooperated with Sega to this time update the project.

In a lengthy series of tweets, it explained how it helped put Amy in the spotlight, helped out with Knuckles in Sonic CD and was able to supply “a few additional updates and enhancements” to help make this collection the “best it can be”. Here’s this announcement in full:

“This is morally and physically exhausting for the employees”.

A recent investigation by NME has found reports of crunch culture and poor working conditions in game development at Ubisoft Paris following a similar allegation by the French trade union Solidaires Informatique last week alleging high rates of sick leave and developer ‘burn out’.

The report includes direct quotes from several developers on Just Dance 2023 and claims that Ubisoft Paris workers encountered a “mess” during the game’s production, with multiple unrealistic demands being set by studio bosses.

Dead good.

In 2019, Magic Design Studios—a new team comprised of many ex-Ubisoft staff—put out the Rayman-esque Unruly Heroes, which we thought was a great platformer with some amazing visuals. For the next few years, the team went quiet while working on its next game, revealed in late 2021 as Have A Nice Death, a tough action roguelite about the grim reaper. Since then, it’s been gradually baking in early access on Steam and now that it finally reached 1.0 status, it’s received a console-exclusive release on Switch. We’re happy to report that the developer has succeeded with its sophomore outing; Have a Nice Death is an enjoyable and addictive experience that roguelite fans should take note of.

It places you in the role of Death himself, who has grown tired of the hard graft involved in harvesting souls for millennia. To take the weight off his shoulders, he decides to start a corporation to hire various ghouls and ghosts to do the work for him while he can distantly manage affairs from a comfy executive office. For years, Death enjoys putting his feet up and letting the Kafkaesque organization do its thing while he just rubber stamps the paperwork that comes across his desk, but matters begin to get out of hand when the admin rises to ridiculous levels. It turns out that Death delegated too many tasks; all the beings he appointed to oversee transitions to the afterlife have gotten much too trigger-happy and have been going way over quota. Death thus picks up his old scythe and begins a little corporate restructuring, setting out on a journey through every floor of every department to aggressively lay off his misbehaving staff.

“Pure racing skill will decide the outcome of the race”.

Kart racers can be fun, but sometimes they’re just plain unfair when you’re outplayed by some higher-tier opponent or item you can’t even defend yourself against. Disney Speedstorm aims to give racers a more even playing field with a new mode called “regulated multiplayer”.

In an update via the official game blog, developer Gameloft explained how exactly this new mode will work. While it’s similar to regular Ranked Multiplayer, there are some “very important differences”. All racers in this mode are exact to the same Upgrade Level, Star Level and crews are not active.

“Warside is the game we have waited for”.

Last year, we covered Warside, a turn-based tactics game which sees you command a cute little pixelated army, which is due to come to Switch in 2023. It gave us major Advance Wars vibes. And today, developer Lavabird Games is finally launching the game’s Kickstarter today!

Looking to capture the spirit of the classic turn-based tactics genre so popular with Intelligent Systems’ series and “evolve” it further. Tactics fans have really been spoilt for choice over the last 12 months, from strategy RPGs to even the return of Advance Wars coming in April. But that hasn’t deterred Lavabird. If anything, it’s spurred them on, as per the press release:
