*spooking intensifies*.

It’s remarkable how easy it can be to see the effects of developers’ genuine passion when playing a video game. In Kraino Origins—the product of one man, Angel Dorantes—you can just feel how much appreciation the dev has for classic retro platformers. Better yet, it turns out that he clearly understands what made the classics so great; Kraino Origins is a good time.

You take the role of the titular skeleton and are tasked with going through eight levels of spooky, scary action. Gameplay takes the shape of a typical retro action platformer, and Kraino is clearly inspired by many of the classics. There’s a little bit of Mega Man in here, a little more Castlevania, some Super Mario Bros. 3, but Kraino doesn’t feel overly derivative of such titles, largely because of its excellent level design. Each level is thematically distinct and introduces a few unique level gimmicks, such as conveyor belts or floating leaves, which are slowly built up into harder challenges over the course of the stage.

If you happened to read our Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon preview a few weeks back you’ll know that after the first five chapters of the game, we were pretty excited to continue our adventures through PlatinumGames’ bewitching spin-off from the main Bayonetta series. We were impressed with its mix of gameplay mechanics and the enchanting atmosphere of the whole thing, and it seemed to be building up to a jaunt through a forbidden forest with plenty of well-designed puzzles and battles that would build on what we’d already seen.

However, as it turns out, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon never really manages to take off as we’d hoped. Whilst certainly entertaining and endearing, what we’re left with is an experience that feels like a little bit of a missed opportunity, especially given how much it manages to get right in terms of its overall style and tone.

The very best…

Back in January, we ran down every Zelda-themed Nintendo console out there in an attempt to find which one you lovely lot thought was the best. There were a lot of these Hylian designs, with the series clearly standing as one of Nintendo’s most popular choices in the special edition design room, but these are dwarfed in number by the Pokémon designs, which require a Pokédex-length list all of their own.

Ok, that might be a bit of an over-exaggeration, but the point stands that throughout the history of Nintendo’s special edition console releases, there have been a lot of Pokémon designs.
